Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Voxel Play to use Voxel Studio?
No. Voxel Studio is a standalone product with its own Annual Pass. Exports also work in Unity projects that do not use Voxel Play - the .unitypackage ships a mesh, prefab and material you can instantiate anywhere. The only Voxel Play-specific asset is the VoxelDefinition, which is ignored by the rest of Unity.
How does the Voxel Play trial work?
If your Kronnect account owns any version of Voxel Play, you can claim a free 30-day trial of Voxel Studio from the access panel. After the trial expires, your account keeps every asset you saved but cannot create new ones until you purchase the Annual Pass.
Can I share my account with a teammate?
The Annual Pass is per user. For teams we recommend buying one pass per seat; this also keeps each member's catalog separate.
Why does my model float above the ground (or sink into it)?
Almost always the Pivot setting. Open the Custom Voxels workspace, select your model, and set Pivot to Bottom (sits on ground). Re-export. The imported VoxelDefinition is overwritten in place and the model sits flush. See Pivot and Placement in Voxel Play for details.
Should I enable Integrated AO?
Only if you plan to light the model with an unlit or vertex-colour shader. Integrated AO bakes ambient occlusion into vertex colours and disables greedy meshing, producing a denser mesh. If you use Unity's URP/HDRP Lit shader or post-process SSAO, leave it off.
Where do exports land in Unity?
Under Assets/Voxel Studio/, split into Meshes/, Materials/, Prefabs/, Shaders/ and VoxelDefinitions/. GUIDs are stable across re-exports, so re-importing the same voxel overwrites the previous assets.
When should I use OBJ instead of Unity Package?
Pick OBJ when the target is not Unity (Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Godot). Pick Unity Package for everything else - you get a ready-to-use prefab and VoxelDefinition.
Which texture resolutions are supported?
256, 512, 1024 and 2048 px. The resolution you pick applies to both the preview cube and the downloaded texture set.
Are normal maps OpenGL or DirectX?
OpenGL (green channel up). Unity URP/HDRP Lit shaders accept this convention directly. If you target a shader that expects DirectX normals, invert the green channel in your material.
Can I change the rig template of an existing character?
No. The rig template is fixed at creation time so animations stay compatible. Duplicate the character, pick a different rig on the copy and reattach the meshes.
Does Voxel Studio work on mobile?
The viewer works on mobile for browsing and downloading. The authoring editors (MicroVoxel, Custom Voxel, Character, Clip) require a keyboard and a precision pointer, so a desktop or laptop is strongly recommended for content creation.
Where is my data stored?
Saved items (uploads, custom voxels, palettes, characters, clips) live on Kronnect servers under your account. Local edits (unsaved drafts, mixes, some favorites) live in your browser's localStorage. Clearing site data removes only the local parts.
Can I delete my content?
Yes. Every item you own shows an X button on the card or in the side panel. Deletion is immediate and cannot be undone.
How do I get support?
Email contact@kronnect.com or open a thread in the Kronnect Discord server. For bugs, please include your account email and a short reproduction.
